Apprenticeship Guide

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a hands-on training program that allows individuals to learn a skilled trade while working under the supervision of experienced professionals. Apprentices earn wages while gaining practical experience and, upon completion, receive certification as a journeyperson in their trade.

How to Get Started

There are multiple pathways into an apprenticeship:

  • Direct Entry: You can apply for an apprenticeship without attending college first. Many employers hire entry-level workers and help them register as apprentices.
  • College Pre-Apprenticeship Programs: These programs provide foundational knowledge and training to help individuals secure an apprenticeship.
  • Co-op and OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program): High school students can start gaining apprenticeship hours while completing their diploma.
Finding an Apprenticeship

To become an apprentice, you need to find an employer willing to train you. Some resources to help you get started:

  • Level Up Ontario (levelupontario.ca): A great resource for learning about the trades and finding opportunities.
  • Skilled Trades Ontario (skilledtradesontario.ca): Provides information on licensing, training standards, and trade classifications.
  • Employment Ontario (ontario.ca/page/employment-ontario): Offers services to help match job seekers with apprenticeship opportunities.
  • Job Banks & Union Websites: Many skilled trades have unionized job boards where employers post apprenticeship openings.
